Our Story

How it All Began

Since 2007

Founded in Fort Defiance, Arizona, Rez Refuge began as a person’s dream for a more harmonious community and better lifeways for Navajo youth and young adults. The organization consisted entirely of volunteers until 2012, during which time it operated its wilderness hikes and provided financial and logistical support to students and families in the Rio Puerco Acres neighborhood in Fort Defiance.

2009

Rez Refuge later acquired an abandoned house in that same neighborhood. And with the help of hundreds of volunteers from around the country and Fort Defiance area, began renovations to transform it into a community center.

2012

In January 2012, Rez Refuge opened its doors for more regular youth development activities and community events. Now, we create alternatives to destructive behaviors and oppressive systems and invite children, youth, and adults into this communal endeavor for a more harmonious community for future generations.
